The Highland Hose Co. No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary, Inc. was organized on October 1, 1973 with Judy Butler serving as President, Marilyn Werner as Vice President and Treasurer and Mary Darcy was Secretary. The meetings were held initially at the home of Judy Butler and then they moved to the Presbyterian Church until the fire commissioners granted the Auxiliary use of the Fire House. (Old St #1 across from the Highland Library). Back then, the commissioners were tough limiting what things the Auxiliary could do in the fire house; they had ground rules. All Auxiliary members were related to a firefighter.
The fundraisers planned were a harvest fest dance, 50’s dances, candles, raffle tickets, bake sales, car washes, and flea markets.
Christmas Parties were at the firehouse with a potluck and gift exchange.
There also was an evening called “Ladies Night” which was separate from the Installation Dinner. The Installation dinner was for members of the Highland Hose Company No. 1, Inc.
In 1989, the Auxiliary decided to have an open membership, which meant you no longer needed to be a relative of a firefighter to become a member.
On May 3, 1992, the Auxiliary was involved in serving refreshments for the Open house celebration of the new fire house on 25 Milton Ave.
In 1993, we celebrated our 20th Anniversary where we cordially invited past members to join us for an evening to reminisce. We were joined by Ann Torsone and Marilyn Werner.
Over the years, we have participated in parades for competitions as well as special occasions, many community projects: Project Homebound, fire prevention sponsoring a free firematic toy raffle, purchase of Boo Boo bunnies/bears for pediatric units at the local hospitals, provide unlimited service to the Highland Hose Co. No. 1 and the Highland Fire District, participate in the Highland High School’s scholarship program, as well as, purchase hats and gloves. We coordinate the 200 Clubs desserts twice a year, have two (2) penny socials, candy fundraisers, candle and flower sales, bake sales, 50/50 raffles, sold refreshments at the firemen’s bazaar and also produced our very own cookbook in 1992.
In 2003, we celebrated our 30th anniversary that was planned for Thursday, August 14, 2003 that was postponed to Friday, August 15, 2003 due to a blackout. We celebrated with dessert, punch and coffee. We also presented each member with a handmade gift and a certificate to thank each member for their dedication and commitment to our organization.
In 2008, we celebrated our 35th anniversary on a beautiful evening in August. We celebrated with a pot luck dinner, with members providing delicious side dishes and dessert. We reminisced with our scrapbooks and had a special presentation by Mary Darcy on the history of our uniform. In October, to celebrate our anniversary we had cake, punch and coffee. That year commemorative photos and certificates to thank members for their dedication and commitment to our organization were presented.
In 2008, we introduced a new member classification – Life Member. This is offered to any member who has accumulated 25 years or more of service.
Over our 35 years of service, we have had 12 Presidents, 5 of which are still active members. We have 2 charter members, Kathy Bragg and Mary Darcy. These members joined this organization within two months of the date organized. We have 4 honorary members: Rene Breitmaier, Rosanne Cooper, Marlaina Gentilquore and Eydie Valentino. We have 1 life member: Kathy Bragg.
On October 1, 2013, the organization celebrated its 40th Anniversary and uncompromised dedication and service to the Highland Hose Co. No. 1, Inc and the community in general. We currently have 19 members who are driven to succeed in every endeavor we encounter.
